'Hello! I am a CBI officer', have you heard such a call? If this happens, be careful immediately, because it may be an attempt of fraud. Recently, an assistant teacher in Agra, Malti Verma, lost her life due to a similar call. This fraud is known as 'digital arrest'. Nowadays new methods of fraud are spreading rapidly in the digital world, and 'digital arrest' is becoming a serious threat.
What is Digital Arrest?
In digital arrest, cyber criminals call you by claiming to be an officer of CBI or any other government agency. They tell you that you are trapped in some legal case and you can be arrested. This is a type of cyber fraud in which these criminals scare people and ask for money from them.
Often, they also say that a parcel has arrived in your name, which contains illegal material. After this, they demand money from you and threaten that if you do not pay the money, a case will be filed against you.
The government alerted
This fraud is often done through phone calls. Criminals may also cite false cases, warrants or notices to scare you. The Cyber Crime Unit of the Government of India has advised people to be cautious of such calls.
The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal has warned through its official X (earlier Twitter) handle @Cyberdost that if someone calls you in the name of an officer of CBI or any government agency, you should immediately be alert, as it may be an attempt of fraud.
What to do to avoid it?
If you get such a call, disconnect it immediately. Do not share your bank account details or any sensitive information on the call. If the cybercriminal says that a family member or friend of yours has been caught in some case, then first talk to your family or friend to know the situation. If you feel that you have been cyber-frauded, or something like this is about to happen, then immediately complain to the police or cyber crime cell. You can also call the cyber helpline number 1930. Apart from this, you can also register an online complaint by visiting the cyber crime portal. To avoid such fraud, be alert and always stay in touch with your family and friends. Respond immediately to any suspicious call and keep your personal information safe. Remember, being cautious is the best solution!
