Here is why M F Husain Painted Hindu God and Goddess Nude

Whenever a person says painter the first word came in your mind is M F Husain. Maqbool Fida Husain was one of the most famous artists of India. M. F. Husain was called the 'Picasso of India' by Forbes magazine. Born on September 17, 1915, in Pandharpur in Maharashtra, Husain was mainly a self-taught artist and made ends meet in his initial days by painting cinema hoardings in Mumbai. Husain was largely responsible for modernizing Indian art as he was one of the most influential founding members of the Bombay Progressive Artists' Group. Husain also tried his hand at printmaking, photography and filmmaking. Apart from receiving the prestigious National Film Award under Best Experimental Film for his movie ‘Through the Eyes of a Painter’, he also made ‘Gaja Gamini’ and ‘Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities’. The latter was screened and appreciated at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. 

M F Husain has painted various pieces of Art in his career span. He has represented India on Different platforms but controversies is also associated with his painting. M F Husain was charged with "hurting sentiments of people" because of his nude portraits of Hindu gods and goddesses. In addition, on 6 February 2006 issue, in a national English weekly published an advertisement titled "Art For Mission Kashmir".

In the year 2006, a nude photo of Bharat Mata was printed on the cover page of a magazine, due to which there was a lot of opposition for Hussain. In this picture, a naked girl was represented as Bharat Mata. This girl was lying on the map of India. The names of the states of the country were written on her body. Hindu organizations protested against it.

M F Husain has painted the ideals of  Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, Lord Hanuman, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Laxmi, etc nude in the name of ‘Indian modernism’.

He has also painted  Gandhi, Einstein, Marx, and Hitler, the ‘great artist’ had decapitated Gandhi but pictured Hitler as naked.  In one of the interviews when he was asked about Hitler Painting. He said, “Painted Hitler nude to humiliate him as he deserves it”, When was asked about he painted Hindu Ideals nude because he hates them he said, “No” and this contradiction in his ideology led to the initial rise of controversy.

He also painted Goddess Saraswati, nude in black and white ‘to make viewers understand the old Indian tradition of formlessness’. “He also painted Goddess Parvati nude and called her ‘Aparn’ which means ‘without leaves’ (nude).  When asked about this he said, “Parvati underwent many years of penance to win Shiva till her clothing deteriorated and fell away in the bitter Himalayan cold”.

The Painter also painted, Goddess Sita sitting naked on the laps of Ravana. In another one, he showed Lord Ram and Goddess Sita spending personal quality time with each other in presence of Lord Hanuman.  When he was asked about this he said, “Nobody is interested in knowing anyone. I give what people want: fodder for scandals and gossip”, He further added, “the goddesses are pure and uncovered. Here, the nudity is not nakedness; it’s a form of innocence and maturity”.
