Hezbollah fired a barrage of missiles at an Israeli military base on October 12, coinciding with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, as Israeli troops engaged with militants in Lebanon and Gaza.
On Yom Kippur, typically a day of quiet reflection across Israel, markets were closed, public transport stopped, and flights were grounded. However, as the country continues to face hostilities with Hezbollah and Hamas, combat operations remained active along Israel’s northern and southern borders.
Hezbollah, which has seen several key commanders lost in Israeli strikes during the ongoing war in Lebanon, reported that it had targeted an Israeli army base near Haifa with missiles, claiming they aimed at an explosives factory. Air raid sirens blared across northern Israel, and the Israeli military stated that it intercepted a projectile launched from Lebanon.
Diplomatic tensions have escalated after Israel acknowledged an attack on a UN peacekeeping post in Lebanon, which injured two Sri Lankan peacekeepers. This marked the second such incident in two days. Israel explained that its soldiers had responded to an imminent threat near the UN position, while UN officials and international leaders, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, condemned the attack.
UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) peacekeepers have found themselves on the front lines of the conflict, which has resulted in over 1,200 deaths in Lebanon since late September. Four peacekeepers have been injured, including two Indonesians, who were wounded when an Israeli tank fired on their watchtower.
International leaders have voiced their disapproval of the incidents involving UN peacekeepers. Irish military chief Sean Clancy expressed skepticism regarding Israel's justification for the attacks, while French President Emmanuel Macron believed the peacekeepers were deliberately targeted. Guterres condemned the strikes as violations of international humanitarian law, and U.S. President Joe Biden urged Israel to cease firing at UN personnel.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, attempts to negotiate a ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced that his government would appeal to the UN Security Council for a new resolution to bring about an immediate ceasefire.
Lebanon’s military also reported that an Israeli airstrike had killed two Lebanese soldiers in the southern part of the country.
