Shimla: In the wake of the devastating floods in Himachal Pradesh, former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur affirmed that the central government is providing unwavering support to the state. The torrential downpours and subsequent landslides have tragically claimed the lives of over 80 individuals and caused extensive damage to vital infrastructure, estimated to be worth crores of rupees. During his visit to the flood-affected regions in Bhuntar town of Kullu district, Thakur witnessed the magnitude of the situation firsthand. Expressing his concerns, he acknowledged the profound impact on the local communities, remarking, "The rain has taken its toll on the Panchayats and Nagar Panchayats. I am here to assess the situation, and it is evident that the losses are immense, making recovery an arduous task. Countless homes have been razed to the ground, leaving people homeless..." Thakur further highlighted the significant alteration in the natural course of the Beas and Parvati rivers, resulting in a massive diversion and exacerbating the damage. Emphasizing the support from the central government, he stated, "The state is receiving comprehensive assistance from the central government..." The state's official statement, released by the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, reported a total of 88 fatalities since June 24, as incessant rainfall continues to ravage Himachal. The statement also mentioned the unfortunate loss of 492 animal lives and the occurrence of 51 landslides and 32 flash floods. The situation has worsened in Manali, where the incessant rain has caused flash floods and landslides, leading to severe devastation. Additionally, due to the extensive damage to roads caused by the continuous rainfall, the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Competitive (Preliminary) Examination has been rescheduled to August 20. The examination, originally planned for July 23, had to be postponed for the safety and convenience of the participants.
