Himachal Pradesh Assembly By-Elections: Congress Secures Four Seats

Shimla: In the recent Himachal Pradesh Assembly by-elections, the Congress party secured a significant victory, clinching four out of the six contested seats. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to secure wins in the remaining two seats. The seats won by Congress include Lahaul Spiti, Sujanpur, Gagret, and Kutlehad, while Badsar and Sudhir Sharma secured victories for the BJP.

The outcome of the by-elections dealt a blow to former MLAs who had switched allegiance from Congress to BJP. Notably, candidates such as Ravi Thakur from Lahaul, Rajinder Rana from Sujanpur, Rakesh Kalia from Gagret, and Devendra Bhutto from Kutlehad faced defeat in the by-elections. Consequently, their political futures have come under scrutiny following these losses.

Following the by-election results, Congress now holds a total of 38 seats in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, consolidating its position in the state legislature. In contrast, the BJP, with its wins in two seats, maintains a total of 27 seats in the assembly. Additionally, it is worth noting that by-elections are slated to be held for three more seats in the near future, as the resignation of independent MLAs was accepted by the Speaker.

The outcome of the Himachal Pradesh by-elections was keenly anticipated, as it carried significant implications for the state's political landscape. While the Congress celebrated its success in the polls, the BJP's aspirations suffered a setback with the unexpected results. The BJP had aimed to secure victories across all contested seats in a bid to bolster its political influence in the state. However, the outcome of the by-elections delivered an unforeseen blow to the party's electoral ambitions.
