History found predicting the future before centuries

New Delhi:- Italy's culture ministry said the flatbread depicted in the 2,000-year-old fresco "could be a distant ancestor of modern cuisine". However, it lacks the classic ingredients that technically qualify as pizza.

This fresco was discovered during recent excavations in Southern Italy in the hallway of a house next to a bakery. The find was made this year during new excavations in the 9th district of central Pompeii, one of nine districts in which the ancient site is divided.

The building was partially excavated in the 19th century, and then excavations began again this January, nearly 2,000 years after the volcanic eruption that engulfed the city. Archaeologists at the UNESCO World Heritage Park say a newly discovered fresco depicts flatbread next to wine goblets, eaten with fruits such as pomegranates and dates, and served with spices and other ingredients. It is said that it may have been eaten with a kind of pesto sauce.

Pompeii director Gabriel Breeding Riegel said it showed a contrast between "frugal and simple dining" and "silver tray luxury".  "In this context, it's hard not to think of pizza, which also began as a 'poor' cuisine in southern Italy, but has now conquered the world and is served in starred restaurants," he said.

In a statement, the culture ministry said three human bones had also been found near the oven in the home's workshop in recent weeks. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD buried Pompeii in ash and eventually froze the city and its inhabitants. Since its discovery in the 16th century, the site has been a rich source of information for archaeologists.

The location is just about 23 kilometers (14 miles) from the city of Naples, home of Italian pizza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
