Hollywood Celebrities Getting Candid about their Mental Health

Everyone has struggles, no matter how rich, poor, beautiful, or not-so-beautiful, one is, and those struggles might lead to various forms of mental health issues, be it, anxiety, depression, PTSD, or something else. However, accepting those issues and working on them and most importantly talking about them is very necessary. Additionally, no matter who you are, spreading awareness about the issue, and removing the stigma is a responsibility of all. 

According to the Pew Research Center, anxiety and depression are taking a toll on young people, and 7 in 10 teens recognize these conditions as significant issues among their peers. Despite the prevalence and global impact of mental health conditions, it's still hard to open up and ask for help when you most need it. Research shows that harmful stereotypes about mental illness often prevent people from seeking treatment or speaking out at all.

However, when someone who influences our life greatly, or the society greatly talks about the same, we as a whole get one step closer to normalising struggling with Mental Health, which is a need of today. 

Below are the celebrities who got candid about their mental health, be it singers, actors, or someone else, or be it through their works, these celebrities have helped break the stigma: 

LIZZO: 

Lizzo has been outspoken about various issues, including how after getting famous there was a point where her mental health started going downhill. Lizzo has ALWAYS promoted body positivity through her works and performances, which is very necessary for teenagers today. 

Back in 2019, through an Instagram post, she indulged in the issues even more, “I’m depressed and there’s no one I can talk to because there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Life hurts,” she wrote in a video. In the caption, she explained that she was “sad af” but had hope that “this too shall pass.” She is one of the very few artists who have been very vocal about mental health and how it is very important to be true to yourself. 

One month later she shared something else on social media, sharing the importance of being emotionally honest with oneself: “Reaching out may be hard but as soon as I did it, I was immediately covered in love,” she wrote. “I went on live to have a discussion about triggers. My triggers are rejection and inadequacy. But I love that I’m more emotionally honest lately. I love that I can use my sadness constructively in real time for gratitude.”

Demi Lovato

Demi has always been vocal about mental health issues and mental health awareness, through her songs and her social media. 

 Additionally, the singer has produced a documentary about mental health called "Beyond Silence," released a documentary about her own struggles, shared powerful side-by-side photos of her recovery from bulimia, and entered rehab to address her substance abuse issues. "It's very important we create conversations, we take away the stigma, and that we stand up for ourselves if we're dealing with the symptoms of a mental illness," Lovato told Variety.

Kendall Jenner

Jenner is one of the richest celebrities and belongs to a family of celebrities who has always been in the limelight, it is easy to think that her life all “Rainbows and Unicorns”. The supermodel previously addressed her mental health struggles in episodes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and in January 2018, shared with Harper’s Bazaar that she has “debilitating anxiety” and suffers from panic attacks.

“I was really, really young, and I remember feeling like I couldn’t breathe and running to my mom and being like, ‘Mom, I feel like I can’t breathe, something must be wrong.’ she said during an appearance on Good Morning America in 2020.

Ryan Reynolds

In an interview with Variety, the actor revealed how his anxiety over disappointing fans led him to "stay up late with the script" and lose sleep. "[Lively] helped me through that," Reynolds said. "I'm lucky to have her around."

Kendrick Lamar

The Grammy Award-winning artist revealed his struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts in his album, "To Pimp a Butterfly." On the emotional track "u," for example, Kendrick raps about the survivor's guilt he feels for leaving his hometown of Compton, California, where many of his friends and family still remain.

"Three of my homeboys [one] summer was murdered," Kendrick told MTV in an interview about the album. He continued: "You living this life, you know what I'm saying, but you still have to face realities of this ... I gotta get back off that tour bus and go to these funerals."
