Delhi riot: MHA gives nod to prosecute Umar Khalid under UAPA

New Delhi: The Delhi government and the Ministry of Home Affairs have approved to prosecute Umar Khalid under UAPA in the Delhi riot case. Umar Khalid was arrested by the Delhi Police under the UAPA in the case of violence. According to the law, under the UAPA it is mandatory to get approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs to prosecute a person.

The Delhi Police got the approval almost a week ago. Very soon, Delhi Police is going to file a charge sheet against Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the Delhi violence court under the UAPA. Apart from this, the crime branch will also file a charge sheet against Omar Khalid soon. Omar Khalid was arrested on 14 September by Delhi Police in a case related to Delhi violence. The Karkardooma Court has extended the judicial custody of Omar Khalid till 20 November. There was a demand from Delhi Police to extend his judicial custody for another 30 days.

Omar Khalid's lawyer opposed the Delhi Police's plea, saying that it has fully cooperated in the investigation of the police. In such a case, the plea made by the Delhi Police to extend judicial custody of Omar Khalid is not cooperating in the investigation.
