Hooch Tragedy Case: Gujarat govt forms committee to probe

GANDHINAGAR:  Gujarat government on Tuesday formed a Fact Finding Committee headed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) to probe into reasons behind the hooch tragedy case. Till Tuesday afternoon, 28 persons have reportedly died after drinking illicit liquor in Ahmedabad rural and Botad districts. Out of the 28 deaths, 2 are suspicious.

Harsh Sanghvi, Minister of State for Home, announced the formation of the Fact-Finding Group, saying, "The committee would be led by IGP (CID-crime) Subhash Trivedi, with IAS Nikhil Gandhi and H.P. Sanghvi, Director of Gujarat Forensic Science Laboratory as members. 

The committee will present its report to the government within three days." Later, speaking to the media in Gandhinagar, Ashish Bhatia, Director General of Police (DGP), said, "Jayesh Khavadia, who works as a supervisor for AMOS, is the kingpin in the hooch disaster. The company deals in industrial alcohol (Methyl Alcohol), which it repacks from 100 litre barrels into 2.5 litre bottles and supplies to a facility in Changodar." 

The officer went on to say, "During the transfer, Jayesh took 600 litres and sold them to his distant cousins Vinod and Sanjay Bhikhabhai for Rs 40,000. The brothers' unused 460 litres were confiscated by police." According to the officer, one bootlegger, Vipul, who had brought the booze from Vinod, had also died after consuming illegal whiskey.

22 people died after drinking illegal booze in Botad district, six in Ahmedabad rural regions, and two deaths are suspected. Three FIRs have been filed in this regard, one each with Barwala, Ranpura, and Dhandhuka.
