How an Indian Man Spent 18 Years Stranded in Lebanon: Gurtej's Remarkable Return

JALANDHAR: A man from Punjab has returned home after 23 years in Lebanon, 18 of which were spent stranded in the conflict-ridden country. He lost his passport in 2006, and despite numerous attempts, was unable to return home until now.

In 2001, Gurtej left India in search of better opportunities, driven by financial struggles. He initially worked in a factory in Ludhiana but decided to venture abroad after paying ₹1 lakh to a travel agent, which led him through Jordan and Syria before reaching Lebanon. Unfortunately, in 2006, he lost his passport, which made it impossible for him to return home despite multiple attempts.

During his long absence, Gurtej faced numerous challenges, including working in the fields while living in constant fear due to ongoing conflicts in the region. Tragically, he lost both his father and brother while he was away.

His return to India was made possible thanks to Rajya Sabha member Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal, who reached out to the Ministry of External Affairs on Gurtej’s behalf. The village celebrated his homecoming on September 6, a moment filled with joy and relief. By the time Gurtej returned, his eldest son had become a father himself.

Gurtej shared his struggles, stating, "I kept going to the Indian embassy in Lebanon, but I was always asked for proof of identity." His story highlights the challenges faced by many Indian nationals stranded abroad.
