Tesla, the premium electric car company, is finally making its way to India. The company has secured a deal to open its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), one of the most expensive commercial areas in the country. Reports suggest that Tesla is paying a record-breaking rent for the space.
According to real estate sources, Tesla will occupy a 4000 square Feet showroom on the ground floor of a commercial tower in BKC. The company will showcase its cars here, paying around Rs.900 per sqft in rent, Rs.35 lakh approx., per month. The lease is for five years, and Tesla is also planning to open another showroom in Delhi’s Aerocity soon.
This move comes shortly after Tesla CEO Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington. Following the meeting, Tesla posted 13 job listings in India, signaling serious plans for expansion. The company had originally planned to enter the Indian market in 2022 but paused its efforts. However, last year, Tesla restarted its push, and now, its launch seems very near.
With ongoing discussions about the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, Tesla’s entry could be perfectly timed. The Indian government currently imposes a 110% import duty on foreign cars, which has been a challenge for Tesla. Former US President Donald Trump has also criticized these high tariffs, suggesting they might push Tesla to build a factory in India. Musk, too, has been advocating for lower import duties, and the Indian government has been considering policy changes in response.
