How to stop ever-growing population? SC notice to Central govt

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Centre on a plea seeking a growing population. The plea had sought direction from the Central government to frame rules, laws and guidelines to effectively reduce the problem of overpopulation. The apex court has now issued a notice to the Centre regarding this. A bench of Justices KM Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy sought the government's response and tagged the matter with other similar pending petitions.

The petition, filed by Dandi Swami Jeetendranand Saraswati, general secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti, said that the population of the country is increasing every year, but natural resources are limited and cannot continue with the growing population. The PIL said that when unemployment and poverty increase, food supply and health care facilities increase drastically, the nation is unable to do any other work again.

The petitioner further said that the government is not able to provide employment to the growing population. Nor is it able to meet basic necessities like food, and water. That is why special attention should be paid to population control legislation to meet these essential requirements. He also said that if the population law is not brought soon, the country may move towards "breakdown."
