Hunt for India Coach: Advantage Kumble over Shastri

NEW DELHI: Former India spinner Anil Kumble has emerged as the leading candidate to become Indian cricket team's next coach.

A powerful member of the BCCI has backed Kumble to be picked ahead of his immediate competitor Ravi Shastri for the job of head coach, according to sources.

The cricket advisory committee (CAC), comprising former star batsmen Sachin Tendulkar,Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman and headed by Sanjay Jagdale may shortlist both Kumble and Shastri and leave it to the BCCI to name the head coach, it is understood.

Kumble, who appeared in person before the panel, is learnt to have made a lengthy presentation which included a road map till the 2019 World Cup.

The day’s proceedings were coordinated by former BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale. Kumble seems to have an edge because he is young and well versed with the modern day demands of the game.

Shastri, who appeared through a Skype call, has pitched for continuity if given charge for a second term and presented a detailed account of improvements made by the team under his stewardship.
