IAF Chief Stresses Need for Enhanced Air Defence Systems Ahead of 92nd Air Force Day

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is prepared to defend India against missile attacks, but significant improvements to its air defence systems are necessary, according to Air Chief Marshal A P Singh.

In his remarks ahead of the 92nd Air Force Day on Friday, Singh underscored the urgency of a robust defence strategy, drawing comparisons to Israel's recent missile attacks from Iran. “The combination of air defence weapon systems we possess, as well as those being procured, would be competent to protect India,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding vital areas and strategic points in the event of an attack. Singh also highlighted India’s capability for cross-border operations, citing the Balakot airstrike in 2019 as evidence of India’s strength. “We can strike our enemies in foreign lands, which we demonstrated during the Balakot air strikes,” he remarked.

Echoing Israel's approach to defence, Singh called for strengthening India's air defence capabilities and the development of indigenous weapon systems. He pointed out the vulnerabilities associated with relying on foreign suppliers in an ever-evolving international landscape. “You can’t rely on external supplies. It’s crucial to produce weapons domestically,” he asserted, encouraging Indian manufacturers to enhance production for self-reliance in future conflicts.

“If you need to fight the war…you have to have them being manufactured in India,” Singh emphasized, noting the strategic importance of domestic production. He also highlighted the economic and logistical advantages of reducing dependency on imported weapons, advocating for a “self-reliant” approach to national security.
