THIMPU India has agreed to consider providing Rs 1,500 crore to Bhutan as part of a new Economic Stimulus Program over the next 18 months. This announcement came following the visit of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who met with Bhutanese leaders to discuss various aspects of their development partnership. During his first official trip abroad since assuming office, Misri engaged in extensive talks with Bhutanese Foreign Secretary Aum Pema Choden. The discussions focused on the details of the Economic Stimulus Program and the progress of ongoing projects under the India-Bhutan development partnership. A joint press release from both governments highlighted the strong and trusting relationship between India and Bhutan, noting their close cooperation in numerous areas. The talks covered a broad range of bilateral issues, including development initiatives, energy, trade, connectivity, and technology. According to the release, Bhutan presented its plans for the Economic Stimulus Program, and India agreed to consider providing the full amount of Nu 15 billion (Rs 1,500 crore) within the first 18 months, contingent on the progress of the proposed projects. Misri's visit included meetings with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, and Minister of Foreign Affairs D.N. Dhungyel. On Saturday, Misri and Choden co-chaired the 3rd India-Bhutan Development Cooperation Talks, focusing on the 13th Five-Year Plan. The talks also saw the virtual inauguration of 19 schools built during the 12th Five-Year Plan period. Both sides approved 61 new projects under the 13th Plan, covering areas such as connectivity, infrastructure, energy, and education. Additionally, new initiatives in industrial parks, sports, youth exchanges, and digital economy were also given the green light, aligning with Bhutan's developmental goals and priorities.
