India Prepares for Quad Summit: Key Topics Still Under Discussion

JAPAN: India is getting ready to host the Quad Summit later this year, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announcing that the summit's agenda is still being worked out. Jaishankar revealed that new topics such as disaster resilience and physical connectivity are being considered for inclusion. “India is set to host this year’s Quad Summit, and we are still finalizing the schedule,” he said.

In Tokyo, the Foreign Ministers of Australia, India, and Japan, along with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, reaffirmed their commitment to the international order. They expressed anticipation for India’s role in hosting the upcoming summit. A joint statement highlighted, “India will host this year’s summit, while the United States will organize the 2025 Foreign Ministers’ meeting.”

During a White House briefing on July 25, U.S. National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby confirmed President Joe Biden’s commitment to the Quad Summit. However, he did not provide specific dates for the event, noting that the U.S. presidential elections are scheduled for November.

President Biden played a key role in arranging the first virtual Quad meeting in March 2021. Since then, the Quad summits have evolved to feature national leaders. The first in-person summit took place on September 24, 2021, hosted by the White House. The summit rotates annually among member countries, with India slated to host this year’s event.

Jaishankar mentioned, “We are considering several new ideas for the summit, including disaster resilience, digital and critical emerging technologies, and physical connectivity. Our goal is to build capacity across the Indo-Pacific region.” He added, “We want to help countries make informed decisions by enhancing their capabilities.”
