India refrains from UNGA vote underscoring need for ‘lasting peace’ in Ukraine

UN: India refrained from the UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution that highlighted the need for "comprehensive, just and lasting peace" in Ukraine. The 193-member un General Assembly adopted the first resolution, put forward by Ukraine and its supporters under title ‘Principles of the Charter of the United Nations underlying a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine'.

141 people voted in favour of the resolution, while 7 people abstained. The resolution that emphasized "the need to reach, as soon as feasible, a comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace in Ukraine in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations" saw India and 31 other nations abstain.

In accordance with the Charter, the resolution urged the member nations and international organizations to step up their support for diplomatic efforts to bring about durable peace in Ukraine. Reiterating its demand that Russia immediately, fully, and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders, it reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders, including its territorial waters. It also calls for an end to hostilities.

India has voted against the UN resolutions on Ukraine, but has repeatedly emphasized the need of upholding international law, state sovereignty, and territorial integrity. India argued for an urgent return to the road of discussion and diplomacy as well as the immediate stop of hostilities.

India stands on the side of peace, negotiation, and diplomacy, declared Foreign Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in a speech to the high-level UN General Assembly session last September.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has been going on for a year. The one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a somber turning point for both the Ukrainian people and the international community, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. It offends our collective conscience that they invaded. That is against both international law and the United Nations Charter.
