India is nearing the completion of a key agreement to acquire 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets from France. Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, the Chief of the Indian Navy, shared the update during the annual Navy Day press conference. He said that the negotiations for the deal are almost finalized, with only one step remaining before it goes to the Cabinet Committee on Security. "Since this is a government-to-government agreement, we expect it to be finalized soon," he added.
This acquisition will significantly enhance the Navy’s capabilities, especially as the region’s security dynamics become more complex. Admiral Tripathi also addressed the growing concerns over Pakistan's naval ambitions, which have been bolstered by Chinese support. "China is helping Pakistan build many of its warships and submarines, strengthening its naval force," he said. He highlighted the delivery of eight new submarines to Pakistan, which are expected to enhance their combat readiness.
In response to these developments, Admiral Tripathi assured that India is closely monitoring Pakistan’s naval progress and adjusting its strategies to counter any emerging threats. He noted that Pakistan aims to build a 50-ship navy, a goal India is watching closely.
Nuclear Submarine and Missile Advances
India’s nuclear deterrence was strengthened with a successful missile test from the INS Arighaat, a nuclear-powered submarine. Admiral Tripathi confirmed that the missile test was successful, and experts are analyzing the missile's trajectory. "The agencies are examining the results, and we will have further details soon," he said.
India’s nuclear-powered submarines, including the INS Arihant, have already conducted several deterrence patrols, reinforcing India’s strategic position. In August, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned the second nuclear submarine, INS Arighaat, an important addition to India’s nuclear triad. Admiral Tripathi assured that the Navy is on track with its plans for nuclear-powered attack submarines, with timelines set by the government.
Fleet Expansion and Indigenous Shipbuilding Efforts
The Indian Navy is also focused on expanding its fleet. Currently, 62 warships and one submarine are being built in India, with plans for 31 more, including six submarines under Project-75 India. Additionally, 60 utility helicopters are being added to the fleet. Admiral Tripathi highlighted this ambitious shipbuilding program as part of the Navy’s efforts to modernize and strengthen India’s naval power, with a focus on self-reliance in defense production.
Admiral Tripathi also mentioned the Navy’s constant vigilance over activities in the region, especially those involving the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy. "We are closely monitoring the PLA Navy’s movements, including their warships and research vessels," he stated.
Navy Day Celebrations in Puri
This year’s Navy Day celebrations will take place on December 4 in Puri, Odisha, where Navy ships have already arrived for the event. Rehearsals and preparations are underway, and the public can expect a live demonstration of the Navy’s operational capabilities. Admiral Tripathi visited Puri to inspect the arrangements and discuss event details with the district administration.
The event will be attended by President Droupadi Murmu, and the public will be able to watch the live demonstrations both at the venue and through broadcasts on national media and the Indian Navy’s YouTube channel. Last year, President Murmu participated in the Navy Day celebrations in Visakhapatnam, and this year’s event aims to showcase the Navy’s readiness to protect India’s maritime interests.
