India Successfully Test Fires K-4 Ballistic Missile From Nuclear Submarine INS Arighaat

India has successfully conducted a test of its nuclear-capable K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from the nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat. The test occurred on Wednesday morning in the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Visakhapatnam. The K-4 missile, which operates on solid fuel and has a strike range of 3,500 km, marks a significant milestone in enhancing India's strategic naval capabilities.

Key Details About the Missile Test Although no official confirmation has been provided, sources familiar with the development stated that the K-4 missile was launched as part of a scheduled exercise. This was the first test conducted from INS Arighaat, which was inducted into the Indian Navy on August 29. Previous tests of the K-4 had been limited to submersible platforms, making this launch from a fully operational submarine a critical achievement.

The 6,000-ton INS Arighaat is India's second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) and was inducted into service earlier this year. Officials are currently analyzing the results of the test and will brief senior military and political leadership upon completion of the evaluation.

Strategic Importance of the Test This test highlights India’s progress in building a credible second-strike capability, a crucial component of its nuclear deterrence strategy. Before this launch, several trials of the K-4 missile had been conducted from underwater platforms by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The Navy plans to conduct additional tests of the missile system and expand its fleet of nuclear submarines, with a third submarine expected to be inducted next year.

At present, India operates two nuclear-powered submarines capable of launching ballistic missiles: INS Arihant and INS Arighaat. INS Arihant is equipped with K-15 missiles, which have a range of 750 km, while INS Arighaat is designed to carry the more advanced K-4 missile with its extended range of 3,500 km.

Broader Defence Strategy The missile test was conducted shortly after India issued a public area warning and a notice to airmen (NOTAM) for an intermediate-range missile test in the Bay of Bengal, scheduled between November 27 and 30. This effort is part of India's ongoing initiative to strengthen its strategic defence posture and enhance its maritime capabilities.

INS Arighaat: A Game-Changer in Naval Defence INS Arighaat is a critical addition to India's nuclear submarine fleet, reinforcing its role as a significant player in maritime security and nuclear deterrence. With the capability to launch nuclear-tipped K-4 ballistic missiles, the submarine enhances India's ability to respond to potential threats effectively and ensures a robust second-strike capacity.
