Abhishek’s record breaking innings lead India win fifth T20I against England, clinch series 4-1

A host of records broke this Sunday, with India scripting history, winning by a massive 150 runs against England in the last T20 match of the five match T20 series. India went on to put up a score of 247 runs in Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium, the opener Abhishek Sharma smashing huge 135 runs. This becomes India’s second biggest win by runs in Men’s T20 International.

Here is the list of India’s record breaking performance, including Abhishek Sharma’s individual stats:

Abhishek Sharma’s score of 135 against England, becomes the highest individual score for India in Men’s T20I, surpassing Shubhman Gill’s 126 (against New Zealand in 2023).

Abhishek’s 135 is also the second-highest score by a batter against England only behind Aaron Finch’s 156 (2013). The former’s century came in 10.3 overs, the second- earliest to achieve the milestone.

In the match, Abhishek could hit 13 sixes, which is the most for India in an innings in Men’s T20I (In the past, Rohit Sharma hit 10 against Sri Lanka, Tilak Verma and Sanju Samson against South Africa in 2023). India overall hit 19 sixes, the most that the England bowlers have conceded in a men’s T20I.

Abhishek scored the second fastest century for India taking only 37 balls, only behind Rohit Sharma’s 35 balls.

While for the half century, again Abhishek scored the second fastest fifty by an Indian in only 17 balls. Yuvraj Singh’s 12 ball fifty against England in 2007 remains the fastest.

This was Abhishek’s 6th T20 hundred, which includes two T20Is. Also, two of them came in less than 40 balls.

Coming over to India, this is the team’s second biggest win margin by runs in Men’s T20I. The highest one stands to 168 runs against New Zealand in 2023. It is also England’s biggest defeat by runs for England in the T20 format. The previous one also came against India by 90 runs in 2012.

India took only 10.3 overs to bowl out England in the fifth T20I. It is the shortest all-out for England in the men’s T20I. The previous shortest came against India in 2012 within 14.4 overs.

India’s total at the end of powerplay stood at 95-1, the highest they have ever made in this phase in Men’s T20Is. It also becomes the sixth highest total in the first six overs in the men’s T20I. The team’s hundred also came in 6.3 overs, the quickest in men’s T20Is.

India’s total of 247 at Wankhede is the second-highest by any team against England in men’s T20I. It is just a run behind 248-6 posted by Australia in Southampton (2013).

Not to forget, Varun Chakravarthy’s incredible performance with the ball in the entire T20I series against England. Across the five matches, Chakravarthy clinched 14 wickets, which is the most for India in a bi-lateral series in men’s T20I. It is also the joint second-highest by any bowler in a bi-lateral series in men’s T20I. While in the fifth T20 match, Chakravarthy took 2 wickets.

Mohammad Shami last night took 3/25 and Shivam Dube 2/11. A special mention of Abhishek Sharma who didn’t fail to impress even with the ball. He took 2 crucial wickets, sparing only 3 runs.

India will next face England in the three match ODI series starting from 6th February, before the big tournament Champions Trophy in action from February 19.
