New Delhi: Indian wrestler Sumit Malik who received an Olympic ticket, has been temporarily suspended after failing a dope test during a recent qualifier in Bulgaria. The incident, which took place a few weeks before the start of the Tokyo Games, is a major embarrassment for the country. This is the second consecutive Olympics, when a doping case has come to light a few days before the games begin. Earlier, a few weeks before the 2016 Rio Olympics, Narasimha Pancham Yadav had also failed a doping test and was banned for four years. Commonwealth Games (2018) gold medal winner Malik qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 125kg category in the Bulgaria event, the last opportunity for wrestlers to secure quotas. The 28-year-old wrestler's dream of participating in the Olympics, which begins on July 23, almost came to an end. An Indian Wrestling Association (WFI) source told the media that UWW (United World Wrestling) informed the Wrestling Federation of India that Sumit had failed the dope test. They now have to give their 'B' sample on June 10. Malik is battling a knee injury. He suffered the injury during the national camp before the Olympic qualifiers began. He participated in the Asian qualifier in Almaty in April, but did not manage to gain quotas.
