India's first voter is no more, took his last breath at the age of 106

Shimla: Independent India's first voter Shyam Saran Negi passed away this morning. Negi, a resident of Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh, was 106 years old. He had cast his vote through his postal ballot on November 2 for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. DC Kinnaur Abid Hussain says the district administration is making arrangements for the last rites of the oldest voter. All arrangements are being made to send them off respectfully.

Shyam Saran Negi, the country's oldest voter, recently came into the news by returning the 12-D form to the returning officer. In fact, the old voter had returned the Election Commission form saying that he would go to the polling station and cast his vote. However, in the meantime, his health suddenly deteriorated and election officials went to his house in Kalpa and cast his postal vote.

Polling for 68 assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh will be held in a single phase on November 12 and the counting of votes will take place on December 8. Earlier, polling is being done through postal ballot paper for the convenience of voters above 80 years of age and disabled. In the first phase, polling was held from November 1 to 3. Meanwhile, on November 2, Negi, the country's first voter, cast his vote. Election officials had set up a postal booth in the house of the 106-year-old voter and laid a red carpet for him. Due to this, District Election Officer Abid Hussain honoured the old voter with a cap and muffler. Born on July 1, 1917, in the then village of Chinni and now Kalpa in Kinnaur district, Negi often recalled and reminded that the first election of independent India was held in 1952, but in the then state system, the high Himalayan hills including Kinnaur had voted on October 25, Votes were cast in 1951. Because in other parts of India, votes were to be held in February-March, 1952. Polling was already held in places with high snowfall like Kinnaur in view of winter and snowfall.
