History of International Disability Day:When the United Nations General Assembly decided to declare 1981 the International Year of Disabled Persons, everything got underway. The five years between that decision and the actual Year of Disabled Persons were spent thinking about the difficulties faced by the disabled, how to equalise their opportunities, and how to make sure they participate fully in community life while enjoying all the rights and benefits non-disabled citizens enjoy. Another topic discussed was how global governments could work to prevent disabilities from ever coming into contact with individuals, as much of the discussion focused on the viruses and other illnesses that cause different types of disabilities. The years 1983 to 1992 were designated as the United Nations Decade of Impaired Persons, and it was during this period that all previously developed ideas were put into practise to better the lives of disabled people around the world. Every year when the day is observed, a different area of enhancing the lives of those who live with disabilities is highlighted. For instance, the year's topic in 2007 was "Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities."
