IOC praises China for delivering promises on carbon-neutral Games

BEIJING: China has been praised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for keeping its promise of a carbon-neutral Olympics by introducing renewable energy to Olympic venues and attracting 300 million winter sports fans.

Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., Chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for Beijing 2022, said recently at a digital press conference that he was pleased and proud to see Beijing place such a high priority on sustainability, delivering on the promise of hosting a carbon-neutral Games.

On Tuesday, the IOC hosted a virtual meeting to discuss technical preparations for the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, including venues, the first version of the Playbook, and ongoing test events.

"They are going to deliver extraordinary games even in the very challenging period of time with corona pandemic," Samaranch said of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organising Committee. "With less than 90 days until the Games, both the International Olympic Committee and the Beijing 2022 Organising Committee are fully operational."
