Iran's President says normalizing relations with Israel will increase regional tensions

The normalisation of ties between some Arab nations and Israel, according to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, would cause further problems in the region. According to the Iranian presidency's website, the President made the statements during a meeting with Salam Zawawi, the new Palestinian Ambassador to Iran, to receive her credentials on Tuesday.

According to media stories, Raisi stated that certain Arab governments' decision to establish diplomatic ties with Israel will not provide them with safety or security, but will instead cause more problems for the area and Arab countries. He said that the public demonstrations by all Palestinians and organisations demonstrated that "the act of treachery" was rejected and denounced.

The Iranian President stated that the Palestinian issue should be the Muslim world's top concern, and that Iran is a sincere supporter of the Palestinian nation and the liberation of Al-Quds, or Jerusalem. For his part, Zawawi chastised Arab governments that "rushed" to normalise relations with Israel, accusing them of forsaking the Palestinian cause and turning a blind eye to the Palestinian people's rights and existing resolutions. Under the Abraham Accords, which were arranged by the United States, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain normalised diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020. Morocco and Sudan are the next countries to follow suit.
