Dhaka: On Tuesday, August 6, Rafiqul Islam Madani, an Islamist hate preacher previously arrested in 2021 for inciting violence, uploaded a provocative video on Facebook amid the ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh. Madani, known for his inflammatory rhetoric, falsely claimed that Senior Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala of the Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur had opened fire on prisoners, resulting in numerous casualties and the martyrdom of one prisoner.
Madani failed to provide any evidence to substantiate his claims and described Bala as an ISKCON member and "Sheikh Hasina’s Dalal," suggesting that the Hindu official was deliberately targeting prisoners. His comments come amid rising tensions following Sheikh Hasina's resignation and subsequent flight to India. The political upheaval has been marked by attacks on Hindu temples and violence against Hindus, with over 50 reported attacks within hours of Hasina's departure.
Madani’s incendiary remarks have the potential to further fuel violence and provoke his large Islamist following, posing a significant threat to the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh. His history of spreading hatred and violence was evident in his previous activities, including incitement against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Awami League government.
Arrested in April 2021 for inciting violence and making inflammatory remarks, Madani's activities have drawn scrutiny from law enforcement. He had previously been detained in March 2021 for inciting protests against Modi's visit to Dhaka, and his mobile phone revealed adult content, leading authorities to label him a "fraud" preacher.
Madani, a controversial figure known for his aggressive rhetoric and calls for violence, rose to prominence through social media and has operated madrassas in Gazipur and Netrokona. His provocative statements often include threats of violence and calls for the establishment of an Islamic state, reflecting his deep-seated animosity towards non-Muslims and secular governance.
In his latest video, Madani continues to spread hate, alleging a conspiracy against Muslims and urging his followers to resist what he describes as a Hindutva agenda. Despite his inflammatory claims, he has yet to provide any credible evidence to support his allegations, continuing his pattern of incitement without substantiation.
