PRAYAGRAJ: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released satellite images showcasing the grand scale of the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, highlighting the vast arrangements made near the Triveni Sangam for this spiritual event. Captured by the EOS-04 (RISAT-1A) microwave satellite equipped with advanced all-weather imaging and fine resolution (FRS-1, 2.25m), these images provide a unique perspective of the event’s infrastructure and attractions. One of the standout features revealed through the satellite imagery is Shivalay Park, a sprawling 12-acre India-shaped park in Prayagraj, designed to be a key highlight of the festival. A time-lapse of three images shows the construction progress of this landmark. The images also offer valuable insights into the Tent City and other infrastructure developments for the mega gathering. On the National Remote Sensing Centre’s (NRSC) website, a series of images compare Triveni Sangam between September 2023 and December 29, 2024, illustrating the scale of transformation. Other satellite captures reveal the iconic temporary pontoon bridges over the Ganga River, as well as the Parade Grounds, which underwent massive changes to prepare for the millions of devotees expected at the event. These images are being used by the Uttar Pradesh administration to enhance safety measures, including minimizing the risk of stampedes or other emergencies. Tens of millions of Hindu pilgrims have flocked to Prayagraj to bathe in the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. This year, officials anticipate a record turnout of around 400 million visitors during the six-week-long event, exceeding the entire population of the United States. The Maha Kumbh is also attracting top political figures and global dignitaries. On Wednesday, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet held a meeting within the Mela premises, where Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced several key initiatives aimed at accelerating the state’s development. Following the meeting, the leaders took a ceremonial holy dip at the Sangam.
