Italian PM Mario Draghi gains support to unlock 200bn euros in recovery fund

ROME: Mario Draghi, the Italian prime minister, convened an emergency meeting of his cabinet of ministers, an unprecedented measure aimed at obtaining support for a competition-related bill that had been stalled in a Senate committee.

According to reports, the Prime Minister summoned the emergency meeting on Thursday.

The technical solution is critical to ensuring Italy's access to almost 200 billion euros (USD212 billion) in grants and loans from the European Union's coronavirus-related National Recovery and Resilience Plan. However, the measure's passage had been delayed because to disagreements among the parties that make up Draghi's government coalition. On short notice, the Prime Minister summoned an emergency cabinet meeting. Draghi requested a vote of confidence from the ministers, which he obtained, and the meeting was adjourned.

The vote among Ministers means that the competition decree, which Italy vowed to enact in December, will now pass the Senate's special committee on industry. The full Senate is now anticipated to vote on the legislation by the end of May, according to a statement from Draghi's office.
