Italian Prez calls for open, constructive multilateralism

President Sergio Mattarella of Italy has called for open, constructive multilateralism, describing it as the "sole approach" to address challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change.

He said this during a traditional year-end ceremony with the world diplomatic corps on Thursday. "We will not be able to resolve crises peacefully without an interlinked multilateralism that is sympathetic to the interests of developing countries and all social actors," he said.

Mattarella went on to say that "constructive and just multilateral action" may be used to defend people's health, and that "Italy supports a solidarity and cooperation-based strategy in the fight against the Covid-19 virus." He also stated that climate change necessitates "joint and concerted solutions emerging from an open and constructive international effort."

"Humanity's future rests on this (effort), which must also address the connected concerns of energy and technological transition, food security, and biodiversity protection," the Italian President stated.
