New Delhi: Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has arrived in New Delhi on his first visit to India, following an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was warmly welcomed by Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary.
The Ministry of External Affairs shared the news of Holness's arrival, highlighting the significance of this maiden visit. Holness's trip to India, taking place from September 30 to October 3, marks a historic occasion as it is the first bilateral visit by a Prime Minister of Jamaica to India.
During his stay, Holness will engage in talks with Prime Minister Modi, and he is also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. The visit presents an opportunity for Holness to connect with other dignitaries and engage with leaders from trade and industry. Several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed, which will enhance bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
India and Jamaica have a rich historical and cultural relationship, stemming from their shared colonial past and values of democracy and freedom, along with a mutual love for cricket. This visit aims to strengthen these ties, boost economic collaboration, and reinforce the longstanding relationship between Jamaica and India.
Earlier this year, on June 5, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed gratitude to Jamaica's Foreign Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith, for her congratulations to Prime Minister Modi on his victory in the Lok Sabha elections. She expressed hope for continued collaboration on issues vital to the Global South.
In a message on social media, Holness congratulated Modi as he commenced his third term. PM Modi, in turn, expressed appreciation to Holness and emphasized the importance of the enduring people-to-people connections between India and Jamaica.
