Srinagar: The status of special state of Jammu and Kashmir has come to an end on Wednesday midnight, with two new union territories Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh having come into existence. The decision came into effect 86 days after the Parliament abolished the special status given under section 370. RK Mathur has taken oath as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. Girish Chandra Moorthy will take oath as the Deputy Governor of Jammu and Kashmir in the afternoon 12. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday. In a late night notification, the Jammu and Kashmir division of the ministry announced several steps, including the implementation of central laws in the state. The Union Territories (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Union Territories will be headed by Girish Chandra Murmu and RK Mathur respectively. This is the first time a state has been divided into two union territories. Geeta Mittal, Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, is administering the oath to both Murmu and Mathur. With this, the number of territories in the country has gone up to 28 and the number of union territories has increased to nine. With this, the existence of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir and the Ranbir Penal Code will end today i.e. Thursday, along with it, 'National Unity Day' will be celebrated today as the birth anniversary of the country's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
