Srinagar, August 19, 2024: In a significant move ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Omar Abdullah, Vice-President of the National Conference (NC), officially launched the party’s manifesto for the upcoming polls. The announcement took place during a press conference held in Srinagar on Monday. The National Conference's manifesto outlines a bold agenda for the assembly elections, promising to reinstate Article 370 and Article 35 A, both of which were abrogated in 2019. These articles had previously granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and their restoration is a key promise in the party's platform. Additionally, the manifesto pledges to revise the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act and advocate for the release of political prisoners. Election Dates and Process The assembly elections for the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will be conducted in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1. The election results are expected to be announced on October 4. Details of the Manifesto The NC’s manifesto was crafted by a dedicated committee headed by Abdul Rahim Rather, a former Jammu and Kashmir finance minister. The committee included other prominent party members, such as Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, the party's Srinagar MP. The manifesto reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing the key issues facing the region. Public Involvement The National Conference had previously sought input from the public, encouraging residents to submit their suggestions for inclusion in the manifesto. This feedback process aimed to ensure that the final document addressed the concerns and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Key Issues Highlighted Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi emphasized that the most pressing issues for the party are the political and constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir. The manifesto aims to address these issues by promising to restore the rights and guarantees that were, according to the party, "snatched" from the people of the region. The National Conference’s manifesto is expected to be a pivotal factor in shaping the election campaign, as it clearly outlines the party's commitment to the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and other significant changes.
