Tokyo: The number of people aged 100 or above in Japan has crossed 71,000. This has been the 49th consecutive year in the elderly society. According to a report by Kyodo News Agency, 71,238 people in Japan are over 100 years old, struggling with declining birth rates and the trouble of the growing elderly population. Surprisingly, 88.1 per cent of people over 100 years of age are women. The total population of women reaching the age of 100 on Sunday has risen to 62,775. The number of males is 8,463, an increase of 132. This figure reflects a 23-fold increase from 3078 people over 100 years in 1989. According to data released by the Japanese government's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the country's population is 12.67 million. Kana Tanaka, 116 years old, is the most elderly Japanese. He was born in 1903. He has been awarded the title of world's oldest living person in the Guinness World Records. Chittsu Is The Sotanabe, the oldest Japanese male. He is 112 years old. He is a resident of Jotsu in Nigta province. No reason why there is such a big difference between women and men has not yet come to light.
