Jay Shah Confirms Rohit Sharma as India’s Captain for Key Tournaments in 2024

Mumbai: BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced on Sunday that Rohit Sharma, who recently led Team India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, will captain India in two major cricketing events next year. Sharma will lead the team in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February and in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord's in London in June.

In a video statement posted on 'X' by ANI, Shah expressed his confidence in Sharma's leadership, stating, "I am confident that under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, we will win the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy." Shah extended his congratulations to the Indian team for their historic T20 World Cup victory, dedicating the triumph to Sharma, Virat Kohli, outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Shah highlighted that this win was significant as it came after a series of near misses, including a loss to Australia in the WTC Final in June 2023 and the ODI World Cup final in November 2023. He praised the performances of key players, including Suryakumar Yadav, who took a crucial catch, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya for their critical contributions in the final match.

Rohit Sharma, who will turn 38 in April, had previously been instrumental in guiding India to the T20 World Cup title, fulfilling Shah’s earlier prediction. Shah had assured that Sharma would lead India to victory and hoist the Indian flag on the field of Barbados, which came true as Sharma did exactly that after the final match.

With the Indian team’s impressive performance in the T20 World Cup, the focus now shifts to the upcoming Champions Trophy and WTC Final, where Sharma will aim to continue his successful stint as captain.
