JOBS SEARCH: Reports show that Retail job searches down 11.8 pc

The number of Indians looking for retail jobs decreased by 11.80% between August of 2021 and August of this year, a report showed.

According to a survey from the international job site Indeed, the number of Indians looking for retail jobs has decreased during the pandemic and beyond because the sector has suffered a 5.50 percent decline in employment over the past three years (August 2019 to August 2022).

Although retail job searches increased by 27.70% between August 2020 and August 2021, they again declined by 11.80% between August 2021 and August this year, according to the data. It was highlighted that a big part of this may be attributable to last year's lockdowns and people's decision to make online purchases while working from home.  The examination of data from the Indeed platform from August 2019 to August 2022 served as the basis for the report. According to the survey, managerial positions in the retail industry, such as "branch manager," have the biggest number of job posts (22.9%), followed by sales associate-level positions (10.7%), store managers (9.52%), logistics associates (4.58%), and merchandisers (4.38%).

However, operational positions like shop manager (15%), retail sales associate (14.4%), cashier (11%), branch manager (9.49%), and logistics associate (9.08%) have more demand in terms of interest from job searchers. ''

In India, seasonal employment tends to rise throughout the holiday season in order to keep up with the rising demand. Even while the percentage rise in jobs wasn't as high as it was previous year, this doesn't mean that many new positions weren't created. More than 39.6% of new employment have been created. According to Indeed India's Head of Sales Sashi Kumar, "We observe the discrepancy with previous year given the global recessions coming, likely inflation, and the cautious approach of hiring today."

The survey states that Bengaluru, with 12.26% of all retail jobs nationwide, has the highest percentage. Mumbai comes in second with 8.2%, followed by Chennai with 6.02%. According to the survey, Bengaluru has the largest demand for delivery employment, with this city accounting for 5.5% of all delivery jobs nationwide. Chennai (4.92%), Mumbai (4.16%), Kolkata (3.75%), and Hyderabad are the next-highest percentages (3.27 per cent). However, Chennai tops the list in terms of the number of job seekers looking for delivery positions, with 6.29 percent, followed by Hyderabad (5.23%) and Kolkata (4.85%), it said.
