Junior Doctors Protest Harassment by TMCP Leader at Medinipur Medical College

Kolkata:  On Thursday, August 29, junior doctors at Medinipur Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal staged a sit-in protest against persistent harassment by Mostafizur Rahman Mallick, a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leader.

Mostafizur, who is linked to former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Principal Sandip Ghosh, is accused of involvement in ragging, including forcing junior female doctors to perform dances to item songs. Mohammed CB, a protesting doctor, revealed that Mostafizur, despite graduating three years ago, remains in the hostel and continues to harass and threaten junior doctors.

Mohammed claimed that Mostafizur has intimidated doctors with threats of eviction and denied access to their registration certificates. He also alleged that Mostafizur controls exam seating arrangements and even influences student outcomes, in addition to extorting ₹2000 from each junior doctor to forcibly induct them into the TMCP.

Medical student Shreya Mondal shared her distress, describing incidents of harassment and forced performances during her early days at the college. She recounted how Mostafizur and his followers would intrude into classes, close doors, and subject students, especially women, to public humiliation and intimidation.

In response to the protests, the college administration has temporarily banned Mostafizur from the campus and promised to address the grievances of the junior doctors. Measures include increasing CCTV surveillance and enhancing security protocols. The principal assured that reforms are underway to improve safety and include student representatives in decision-making committees.
