Podcast host Joe Rogan has raised alarm bells about the potential impact on free speech if Kamala Harris becomes the President of the United States. In a recent episode of his show, Rogan discussed the current landscape of social media restrictions and identified platforms like X and Rumble as the few that allow for unrestricted expression.
Rogan expressed skepticism about improvements in free speech under a Harris administration, stating, "I don't think it [censorship] turns around if Kamala Harris gets into office. I think they clamp down more.” He highlighted Harris's previous comments regarding social media accountability and her approach to misinformation and hate speech.
During a 2019 speech to the NAACP, Harris asserted, “We will hold social media platforms accountable for the hate infiltrating their platforms because they have a responsibility to help fight against this threat to our democracy.” She emphasized the necessity for regulations on social media giants like Facebook and Twitter.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has acknowledged significant pressure to censor content, describing such actions as “wrong.” Rogan underscored the potential consequences of these perspectives, particularly if Harris and the Democrats ascend to power.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, echoed Rogan's concerns, tweeting, “Joe Rogan is absolutely right,” in agreement that the First Amendment faces threats.
Rogan also criticized recent Democratic statements regarding free speech, referencing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s claim that the First Amendment does not protect misinformation or hate speech. Rogan responded, “OK, well, it certainly does,” pointing to a Supreme Court ruling from 2021 affirming that hate speech is indeed protected under free speech.
Furthermore, Rogan questioned the rationale behind banning content that later proves to be accurate. He addressed the topic of COVID-19 mask mandates, asserting, “Face masks don't work,” despite evidence suggesting their efficacy in reducing virus transmission.
A recent survey by the Freedom Forum indicated a decline in First Amendment support among Americans, with only 58% of respondents backing it, down from figures recorded in 2020.
