Kapil Sibal slams EC for cornering political parties over hollow promises

New Delhi: Breaking his age-old ties with the Congress, Kapil Sibal, who reached the Rajya Sabha with the help of the Samajwadi Party (SP), has attacked the Election Commission, saying that it may need a code of conduct itself. In a letter to recognised political parties, the Election Commission has said it cannot ignore hollow poll promises as it will have far-reaching consequences. Political parties will have to tell how they are going to fulfil their promises. What is their plan for this, and how will the financial arrangements be made?

On this, Kapil Sibal said that the Election Commission is reversing after filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court to stay away from the debate on freebies. It's like cheating. The Commission now wants to include it in the Model Code of Conduct. The Commission has asked all political parties to give their views on the proposal by October 19. He said that the Election Commission may need the Model Code of Conduct.

Let us know that at present, the mercury of Indian politics is hot about election promises. PM Narendra Modi has made sharp attacks on freebie culture in his speeches. He says that it is very fatal for the country. After PM Modi, the apex court has also taken cognizance of this. After both, now the Election Commission has also jumped into the fray regarding the freebie culture. Let me tell you that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is making promises in the election states. His freebie promises are also showing an impact. The impact of the schemes started in Delhi was seen in Punjab. Now there are elections in some more states including Gujarat. Kejriwal is currently focusing on Gujarat.
