Gram panchayat elections postponed due to Corona crisis

To prevent the spread of epidemic coronavirus infection, the Karnataka State Election Commission has postponed the gram panchayat elections. The term of the members of 5,800 of the state's 6,025 panchayats will expire between June and August 2020. Assuming the current situation as an 'extraordinary situation', the Election Commission decided to temporarily postpone the elections. The opposition has threatened to protest in the event of no election.

In its statement, the Election Commission said that after reviewing the situation, a decision will be taken on when the election will take place. Before taking the decision to postpone the election, the Commission sought a report from the Deputy Commissioners on the situation in the districts. On the basis of DC reports, the Commission came to the conclusion that officers at the district level are deployed to take measures to fight the covid-19 epidemic and it may be even more difficult to allocate sufficient staff, arrange transport for elections. In such a situation it can be difficult to maintain law and order.

Apart from this, the Commission also said that maintaining the 'physical distance' required to prevent the spread of the virus can be difficult during elections, as members of political parties, voters and even officials can prepare the voter list. To be collected during voting, and during counting. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued guidelines to all the states to take various measures including preventing the gathering of large number of people at one place to maintain social distancing and prevent the spread of the virus. In such a case, conducting Gram Panchayat would be in violation of the instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
