Delhi court extends Kejriwal's judicial custody in liquor scam case

A Delhi court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody period of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The court took this decision in connection with a corruption case registered by the CBI. Now his custody will continue till August 27. Special Judge Kaveri Baveja presented Arvind Kejriwal in the court through video conferencing, after which his custody period was extended. The court may consider the supplementary chargesheet filed by the CBI on August 27.

Supreme Court refused to grant interim bail

Earlier, the Supreme Court refused to grant interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal in the corruption case related to the liquor scam. Kejriwal had challenged his arrest, but a bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan has sought a response from the CBI on this. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, argued before the court that he has already got interim bail thrice in the money laundering case, and hence he should get regular bail in the CBI case as well. Singhvi also pointed out that the Delhi High Court had stayed the lower court's June 20 order, in which Kejriwal was granted bail.

Arguments of Kejriwal's lawyer

Singhvi said that when Kejriwal can be granted bail under PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act), it is not fair to deny him bail in the CBI case. He also told the court that it was only after Kejriwal's arrest that witnesses mustered the courage to testify. Singhvi requested interim bail citing Kejriwal's health problems, but the Supreme Court rejected it and scheduled the next hearing of the case on August 23.

Delhi High Court decision

Earlier, the Delhi High Court had upheld Kejriwal's arrest and said there was no malice in the CBI's actions. The High Court also said that Kejriwal can influence witnesses, and only after his arrest can the witnesses dare to testify. The High Court had asked Kejriwal to approach the lower court for regular bail in the CBI case. The court said that Kejriwal is not an ordinary citizen but a Magsaysay Award winner and the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party, which gives him the ability to influence witnesses.
