KERALA: Chandy Oommen Sworn in as Puthuppally MLA

Chandy Oommen was sworn in as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Puthuppally constituency on September 11th. At 37 years of age, Chandy Oommen, a first-time MLA, succeeded his late father and former Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, by winning the by-election and retaining the Congress stronghold with a significant victory margin. He defeated his closest competitor, Jaick C. Thomas of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), by a record-breaking margin of 37,719 votes.

The swearing-in ceremony took place after the Question Hour when the Assembly resumed its session after a brief break due to the Puthuppally by-election. During this event, Mr. Oommen received greetings from Speaker A.N. Shamseer, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, other Ministers, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, Deputy Speaker Chittayam Gopakumar, and leaders of various political parties as he made his way to his assigned seat.

Before heading to the Assembly, Mr. Oommen sought blessings from his mother, Mariamma Oommen, and seemed to take over his father's office room at their 'Puthuppally House' in Jagathy, Thiruvananthapuram.

He expressed that his father's memories would inspire and guide him in his efforts to promote development and that his responsibilities had significantly increased. He also mentioned his intention to stay at the 'Puthuppally House' whenever he was in the capital city.

Prior to his arrival at the Assembly, he made quick visits to various places of worship.
