'Lock men inside, let women go out', says High Court

Kozhikode: The Kerala High Court has pulled up the government for imposing a curfew for girls studying in Kozhikode Medical College. The court sought information from the administration as to why restrictions were imposed on girls while "men... create more trouble". According to a report received, Justice Devan Ramachandran said, "Lock up the men. I am saying this because they create more trouble. After 8 pm, impose a curfew on men and let the girls go out." Patriarchy of any kind has been rejected in modern times. Girls are just as capable of taking care of themselves as boys. If security is needed, take the help of the state and officers instead of imposing a curfew.

The Higher Education Department of Kerala had issued a notification imposing curfew regarding timings for the students in the hostels of Kozhikode Medical College. This decision of the Kerala High Court has brought about this. After the curfew notification came, the students challenged it in the High Court. It has been told in the notice that the girls cannot go out of the hostel after 9.30 pm.

While no such notice has been issued for male students. At the same time, the Kerala government has claimed that their parents were concerned about the safety of the students studying in medical college. This notice was issued only after considering the requests of the parents. On this claim of the government, the High Court said, the duty of the government is to ensure a safe campus for all students, not to confine girls in a circle. The High Court has asked the state government to give a concrete reason for imposing the curfew. The court says that the notice which prevents girls from leaving the campus after 9.30 pm... Why should this be allowed?
