Kerala: MC Josephine resigns as women’s commission chairperson on CPM direction

Thiruvananthapuram: Subsequent on protests spilled on to the streets following a curt remark by M.C. Josephine, the chairperson of the Kerala Women's Commission on Friday decided to quit from her post.

The Congress and BJP targeted M. C. Josephine for allegedly slighting a victim of domestic violence during a televised phone-in programme. The incident had unleashed a storm of social media protests, with women activists, human right organisations and opposition parties wading into the controversy.

The online ire manifested on the street early Friday with India Mahila Congress workers staking out in front of the AKG Centre in Thiruvananthapuram ostensibly to prevent Ms. Josephine from participating in the CPI(M) State secretariat. Later, the police forcibly removed them from the spot.  Finding no support for her in the party and the growing protests, Josephine was asked to put in her papers. Her five-year term was to end next year. For the past few days, the state has witnessed a spate of suicides by young women upset by the grooms' demand for more dowry. In the midst of all these cases, came Jospehine's statement, which did not find favour with the people.
