Kochi: The Government of Kerala has approved the packets of dates and Quran sent through the UAE Consulate. The Border Tax Department has registered two cases against the government. The state government has approved 18,000 kgs of dates and consignment of Holy Quran allegedly imported by UAE for its personal use through the diplomatic channel. Apart from this, the investigation has also started and it came to fore that some powerful people who have allegedly violated the law. The customs officer says that the state government had sanctioned 18,000 kg of dates imported by the UAE consulate officer at Thiruvananthapuram in 2017 for its personal use. Similarly, a consignment of Holy Quran imported by UAE Consulate in 2020 was also accepted by the State Government Officer. The officials also said that these were clear cases of violation of the Customs Act as the state government had accepted things brought by diplomats for their personal use through a tax exemption certificate. The officers said that the state government officials know very well that they have been denied to take anything from the foreign government. UAE officials imported some items for their personal use and the state government approved those items for distribution at some places. The case is now being investigated.
