Patna: Amidst the severe flood situation in Bihar, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday called upon both the central and state governments to accelerate relief and rescue operations and ensure adequate compensation for the flood-affected people.
In a message on X, Kharge expressed deep concern, highlighting that nearly 15 lakh people across 17 districts have been affected by the floods, with multiple fatalities reported in recent days. He emphasized the destruction caused by the disaster, particularly in North Bihar, where bridges have collapsed, and citizens' homes have been destroyed.
Kharge urged the government to provide swift and sufficient aid, noting the contributions of the Indian Air Force, NDRF, and SDRF personnel in rescue efforts. He also called for compensation to be granted to farmers whose crops were destroyed and stressed the need for Congress workers to assist in serving the victims.
Heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Nepal and significant water discharge from the Kosi and Gandak barrages have led to widespread flooding, affecting northern Bihar. Some rivers have surpassed danger levels, and several districts, including Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur, have been severely impacted, with residents forced to evacuate their homes. Local authorities have allowed boat movement to aid residents in flood-stricken areas, while senior officials oversee relief operations.
