Khel Ratna, India's highest honour in the world of sports, will no longer be known as former PM Rajiv Gandhi. It will now be replaced by hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand. PM Narendra Modi made an announcement in this regard on Friday. Prime Minister Modi says that the decision has been taken after receiving the request of many people. Announcing this, PM Narendra Modi said, "Khel Ratna will now be called major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The decision has been welcomed across the country. Started this year:- The Khel Ratna Award was instituted in the year 1991-92. This is the highest civilian honour in the field of sports in India. These were the first winners:- Viswanathan Anand, who brought laurels to the country on the international stage in the game of chess, was the first player to be honoured with this Khel Ratna award. When more than one winner is made:- Usually, this award is given to only one player. But there were many occasions when more than one player was selected for it. In 1993-94, 2002, 2009, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, more than one sportsperson were awarded Khel Ratna awards. Who was the first cricketer:- Sachin Tendulkar was the first cricketer to get the Khel Ratna. He was given the award for his outstanding performance in 1997-98. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have received the award. What the reward is:- The Khel Ratna Award winner receives medals, citations and a reward of Rs 25 lakh from the government. A total of 45 sportspersons have been honoured with the award so far.
