BEIRUT: Visiting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that, despite the country's various difficulties, Lebanon is at the centre of all world initiatives and efforts. " Lebanon is now at the heart of all our initiatives and efforts," Guterres said during a meeting with Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the Lebanese cabinet at the Grand Serail on Monday. The Secretary-General underscored the significance of adopting coordinated strategies among UN and Lebanese authorities in pursuit of a stable, peaceful Lebanon that provides hope and opportunity to all of its citizens. Guterres stated that the United Nations is prepared to assist Lebanon in its negotiations with international financial institutions in order to encourage them to offer the country with the most assistance feasible. Mikati, for one, believes Lebanon urgently requires more support, particularly for a financial assistance programme for hundreds of thousands of families. He appealed to the world community for assistance in assisting Syrian refugees in returning to their homeland. Guterres met with House Speaker Nabih Berri earlier on Monday, promising to facilitate negotiations for a maritime border demarcation that would allow Lebanon to fully use its natural riches. Guterres arrived in Lebanon on Sunday to express his support with the Lebanese people in the midst of the country's many difficulties.
