Punjab: CM Amarinder will fill the state treasury by imposing additional tax on liquor

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh approved the imposition of Kovid cess on liquor in the state from June 1 to compensate the huge revenue deficit caused by the epidemic Corona lockdown. With this decision, the state will get additional revenue of 145 crores during the current financial year. The price of wine per bottle for the common people will increase by 5 to 50 rupees. 21 percent of total budgetary revenue estimates. For this reason, some drastic measures are needed to raise additional revenue.

During the current financial year, the Chief Minister formed a group of ministers on May 12 to impose additional excise duty on liquor. It included Finance Minister, Education Minister, Housing Minister, Urban Development Minister and Forest Minister. On these recommendations, it has been decided to levy additional unessential fees on imported foreign liquor and beer and additional excise duty on other types of liquor. Instructing the Excise and Taxation Department, the Chief Minister said that the entire amount of revenue to be collected should be spent on works related to Kovid.

According to the data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 8,171 new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours and 204 people have died. After this, the total number of corona positive cases across the country has increased to 1,98,706, of which 97,581 are active cases, 95,527 people have been cured or discharged from hospital and 5,598 people have died so far.
