NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Wednesday until November 28 due to disruptions caused by opposition demands to address urgent issues. These included the indictment of the Adani Group, the ongoing crisis in Manipur, and violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. A similar situation occurred in the Rajya Sabha, where proceedings were also suspended for the day. Earlier in the day, the Lok Sabha was briefly adjourned until noon before further disruptions occurred following a motion by Union Minister Jitendra Singh. BJP MP Dilip Saikia, who was chairing the session, later announced that the House would reconvene on November 28 at 11:00 AM. Opposition members had submitted several notices calling for adjournment motions in both houses, urging urgent discussions on several key concerns. Congress MPs Manickam Tagore and Manish Tewari raised motions in the Lok Sabha, calling for debates on the implications of recent U.S. court indictments against the Adani Group, which they argued raised questions about India's business regulatory environment. Tagore's motion emphasized the need for an immediate discussion on the matter, while Tewari pointed out the potential damage to India's global business reputation. “The robustness of our regulatory processes is under question,” Tewari said. Congress MP Hibi Eden also demanded a discussion on the worsening situation in Manipur and called on the government to take steps to restore peace and ensure accountability. "Immediate measures are necessary to bring justice and stability to Manipur," Eden stated. In the Rajya Sabha, Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala invoked Rule 267 of the Rules of Procedure to seek the suspension of scheduled business for the day. His notice focused on allegations in a U.S. court claiming that the Adani Group engaged in bribery to secure power agreements, a matter Surjewala described as serious and requiring immediate attention. The winter session of Parliament, which began on November 25, has seen significant disruptions so far, with both houses adjourned early on the first day due to protests. The session is scheduled to run until December 20, with debates on several important national and international issues expected to take center stage.
