Macron Keeps Attal as Caretaker PM Amid Political Uncertainty

French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to retain Prime Minister Gabriel Attal in his position temporarily to maintain stability in the country following recent parliamentary elections. The decision comes after a left-leaning coalition secured the most seats in a closely contested runoff.

"The President has asked Gabriel Attal to continue serving as Prime Minister for the time being to ensure stability," Macron's office stated on Monday.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal had earlier indicated his intention to resign following the election results, which saw the New Popular Front leading but falling short of a majority. The far-right National Rally came third, while President Macron's centrist party also played a significant role despite losing ground.

With France now facing the prospect of a hung parliament, the political landscape suggests potential for gridlock in governance—a critical concern for both domestic stability and international relations, including impacts on global diplomacy and Europe's economic equilibrium.

Attal, following French political tradition, offered his resignation on Sunday but expressed readiness to continue as caretaker until further decisions are made by the president.

Meanwhile, Spain’s socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez praised the outcome of the elections in France and the UK, emphasizing the "rejection of the far-right."

In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Sanchez celebrated France and the UK’s "decisive commitment to a socially progressive left that tackles people’s issues with bold and sincere policies."

"There is no coalition or government involving the far-right," Mr. Sanchez affirmed. "The United Kingdom and France have affirmed their support for progress and social advancement, rejecting any regression in rights and freedoms."
